The Hazaras are an ethnic group native to the Hazaristan (Hazarajat) region of central Afghanistan and generally scattered throughout Afghanistan. They are one of the largest ethnic groups in Afghanistan and are also a significant minority in neighboring Pakistan, particularly in Quetta, and in Mashhad, Iran. They speak the Hazaragi dialect of Persian, which can be understood with Dari, one of the two official languages of Afghanistan.
The Hazara have long been persecuted by both Afghanistan and Pakistan, as well as by non-state militant groups.
In the post-Taliban era (after 2001), conditions for the Hazara improved slightly, but they still faced racial and political discrimination. Over the course of two decades, hundreds and thousands of Hazaras were killed by the Taliban and militias.
In all of these incidents, the genocide against the Hazara was clearly visible, as schools – especially girls’ schools – in Hazara areas, mosques, and hospitals were repeatedly hit.
Since the Taliban took power again on August 15, 2021, the situation in Afghanistan has been deteriorating day by day. We see many killings and forced migration.
In this event, we want to present a historical perspective of this genocide as well as the current situation in Afghanistan.
